Pete Hautman

01-10-2005

What was your favourite book when you were Denn Doyle’s age?
The Lord of the Rings

Have you ever been this obsessed with Poker?
Almost. I play a lot of poker. I play almost every day online. But I don't play for really big stakes like Denn.

Do you really feel like a young adult when you write a story for them? Why (not) and (how) does this help you writing?
No, I feel like this old guy who used to be a young adult. But I remember.

What do you like best: writing for teenagers or adults? Why?
I like both. It's like apples and oranges. Some days I feel like eating an apple, some days I crave an orange.

What is the best fanmail you've ever had? (can also be a reaction from a fan in real life)
My favorite letter was from a girl named Elma in Holland. In her letter she said, "I'm not a girl who doesn't know what to say fast. But after reading your book I couldn't say anythink."

I thought that was really funny and cool.

In one interview you said to be influenced by P.G. Wodehouse and Patricia Highsmith. Do you think other writers look up to you as well as you do with Wodehouse and Highsmith?
I don't know! Of course, both Wodehouse and Highsmith are dead, so they'll never know how much they meant to me.

When you start writing, is a story all in your head or do you work it out first? In other words: do you know how a story ends when you write it or does it evolve while writing?
Usually I know how it will end, but I never know how I will get to the ending until I've written it.

I've read one story took you twenty years to write. Does that mean it was a hard story, that you didn't like it that much or that you wanted to really take the time to work it out?
I kept changing my mind and getting frustrated and putting it away for months at a time. Finally I figured it out and wrote the book fairly quickly, in about a year. That book was Sweetblood.

Why poodles (his pets, red.)?
I'm allergic to dogs, but poodles don't shed so they don't bother my nose much.

Is there a question you've been really longing to hear but wasn't asked before and would you answer it as well?
Yes. I wish someone would say to me, "I have a million dollars that I must give away immediately. Would you like to have it?"
